This style Alfa Romeo Spider was launched at the Geneva Motor Show at the beginning of March 2006.
The spider shares the same chassis as the Brera, known as the “premium platform” or type 939, this was developed in conjunction with GM and is also used on the 159 although with a longer wheel base. The Brera Spider when originally launched had the choice of the new 185 bhp 2.2 litre JTS engine or the 3.2 litre V6 24 valve 260 bhp engine but in 2007 the 2.4 litre 20 valve diesel was added to the range. Both the petrol engines are direct injection with both inlet and exhaust cam shafts having variable timing.
The 3.2 litre engine has a 6 speed gearbox and exploits the Alfa Romeo’s Q4 four wheel drive system which is tuned to give the car a distinct rear wheel drive feel.
Suspension is double wishbone at the front with a wide upper wishbone, while the rear has got a multi link arrangement. Accommodation is much improved on the last model spider, with considerably more luggage space and the Spider comes with a pair of neat titanium coloured aerodynamic roll over hoops.
